Hemp Protein Breakfast Smoothie! (Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan)

Published by at 11:20 am under Gluten Free Recipes

WOW so I had a flu that took me a week to recover from, went wedding dress shopping and didn’t get to blog for a while! This morning I was like “What am I going to have for breakfast” and thought “OH my normal smoothie” and then I thought “Wait, have I ever shared this recipe on my blog?” and the answer was “No” and I was like “I should!” because it is soooo simple, yummy and a healthy way to get going for the day!

First you’ll have to get yourself some hemp protein. And I know you’re asking “But why hemp protein? Let me explain & convert you too!

  1. I can’t have dairy or soy or gluten. So this cuts out a *lot* of protein powders (whey, soy & anything that has either product in it);
  2. Hemp is a complete protein that contains all 20 amino acids (and all 8 essential amino acids) required by the body;
  3. It doesn’t make you bloated & gassy like whey protein (double yay!);
  4. All the fats in hemp powder are good for you! Hemp provides essential fatty acids omega 3 & omega 6 – in the healthy 3:1 ratio needed by our bodies and GLA;
  5. Depending on the hemp protein powder you are using, it is very high in easily digestable fibre (note: higher protein hemp powders tend to have *less* fibre – so I’d recommend this one if you’re looking for a 50% protein powder!), BUT
  6. Manitoba Harvest hemp protein powder is allergen free (huzzah!) and organic!
  7. You can use hemp protein powder it in protein shakes, you can bake with it, cook with it – whatever! And it tastes good! (It just adds a nutty flavour!) Mmhmm!

Of course there are more reasons but those are my top few reasons in no particular order.

Some more details/article can be found here , here and here.

Personally I use Manitoba Harvest as it is organic, raw processed, and fairly easily accessible (if in T.O. I have found the best prices at “Essence of Life” in Kensington Market!)

Also, don’t forget to store in in the fridge once opened!

OK so how do you make a shake that tastes decent and doesn’t stall your blender?

Dee’s Breakfast Hemp Protein Smoothie! (NOTE: this recipe makes 2 servings, just halve ingredients to make one!)

  • 8 tbsp. hemp protein powder of your choice (we like this one)
  • 2 cups almond or any non-dairy milk (I use Earth’s Own Almond Fresh – Original)
  • 1 1/4 cup  frozen/fresh fruits (I usually use a mix of frozen raspberries, wild blueberries, strawberries, mango…whatever I have on hand!)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1-2 tbsp. flax seed meal (optional)
  • handful of baby spinach leaves (optional)
  1. Add ingredients to blender
  2. Blend on medium for about a minute maybe with a few pulses in there to shake things up!
  3. Drink!

This is sooo easy in the mornings and really filling – I usually have this around 7:00am and don’t start getting hungry for my snack until 10:30 – 11:00am! It also is a good way to sneak more healthy greens into your diet! I’m going to try this with kale later this week!

ALSO: I received a new camera for my birthday! (A bit early –  it literally shipped the day after Stefan ordered it!) so expect some more appetizing food pictures soon! *wheeeeeeee!*

    Ooh! I’m going to try this 🙂 We have hemp seeds… do you think we could just blend those into a powder?
