Hot Chocolate with Coconut Milk & Cocoa (Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan)

OK so I’ve been experimenting with my hot chocolate recipe. Tinkering. I wanted something a bit lighter. And something that I could still make if I didn’t happen to have a dark chocolate bar handy.

So I googled and found some recipes that used french presses…other things to whip…tons of white sugar…zzz…and after 3-5 tries I have finally found a recipe that is creamy, but not as heavy and SUPER dark chocolately and delicious without being too bitter and without adding a TON of sugar. (I work hard for you guys! *lol*)

Gluten Free & Dairy Free Hot Chocolate with Coconut Milk & Cocoa

  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp. fine cocoa
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. agave nectar (or honey or your sweetener of choice) – to taste
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  1. Mix cocoa, sugar, salt and water together in a small saucepan. Add coconut milk.
  2. Whisk over medium heat until heated to your preference (I like it *just* before boiling!)
  3. Remove from heat. Add vanilla. Whisk some more.
  4. INGEST DELICIOUS HOT CHOCOLATE!

Now a word of warning – I am a dark chocolate freak. Stefan tried it and said the texture was great but he found it a bit bitter/too dark chocolately – so if you don’t like dark chocolate, either add a bunch more sugar *or* make a different recipe. Just warning you.

If you love the scrumptious deliciousness of dark chocolate, then you are in for a HUGE treat!! *mmmhm!*

    Mmmhm I just made this with almond milk (no coconut milk to be found) and it’s good! It’s more amaretto-y flavoured…but still really good!
